Nana El Mehrine was born on March 25, 2021, in the Tebourba region of Tunisia, an area known for its olive groves, traditional agriculture, and deep roots in North African culture. It is also one of the regions from which the Sloughi breed originates, having accompanied the people of the Maghreb for centuries.
We chose Nana from the day she was born. From the very beginning, we knew that if it became possible to bring her to Europe, she would have a place at ORIGEN CHARM.
She comes from the El Mehrine kennel, owned by Ghazi Mahjoub. In his family, breeding Sloughis is a tradition passed down through generations. In North Africa, the Sloughi is more than just a dog breed. It is part of a family’s heritage, cultural tradition, and way of life, preserved and handed down from one generation to the next.
Nana’s sire, Djamel, comes directly from hunters’ stock. He represents a lineage shaped in an environment where Sloughis were used for hunting for generations and accompanied their owners through the demanding conditions of North Africa. Her dam, Hamra, descends from old Tunisian bloodlines and carries the heritage of original Sloughis from their country of origin.
Ghazi Mahjoub is also an organic farmer and producer of natural foods. For generations, his family has cultivated olive groves in Tebourba and devoted itself to the traditional production of olive oil and other products typical of the Tunisian region under the Les Moulins Mahjoub brand. Their farm is built on respect for the land, traditional agricultural methods, and the preservation of Tunisia’s farming heritage.
On February 6, 2022, Ghazi Mahjoub personally brought Nana to Slovakia. The import process and documentation were organized with invaluable help from Kateřina Pokorná of the Czech kennel won Habule.
Despite the restrictions and challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, Ghazi spent a day and a night with us. We had the rare opportunity not only to meet the man behind Nana, but also to learn about his family’s story, traditions, and perspective on the Sloughi in its country of origin. We spoke about Tunisia, life in Tebourba, Sloughi breeding, and the values that have been passed down through his family for generations. These conversations were just as valuable as the import itself and helped us better understand the environment from which Nana comes.
As a symbol of Nana’s homeland and the country she came from, Ghazi brought several gifts, including a small wrought-iron olive tree — a beautiful reminder of Nana’s birthplace, whose legacy continues today at ORIGEN CHARM.
At ORIGEN CHARM, Nana became not only a beloved member of the family but also the mother of the B litter. From this litter came Bushra ORIGEN CHARM, who today continues her mother’s legacy and carries forward the Tunisian roots of the Mahjoub family.
Nana El Mehrine is not simply an imported female from Tunisia. She carries within her a piece of the North African landscape, history, and culture of the Maghreb from which the Sloughi originates. Through her, a part of that heritage became part of ORIGEN CHARM and continues into future generations.
On 2 May 2025, Nana became the proud mother of our B litter, welcoming 11 sweet sloughi puppies in beautiful shades of sand — 6 males and 5 females. The sire of the litter is del Khazaris Kabriq, a descendant of some of the last generations of Sloughis imported directly from Tunisia and Morocco.
